Located high in the Atlas Mountains, Mount Toubkal stands at 4,167 m and is the highest mountain in North Africa. Djebel Toubkal is the mountain’s full name. It is a steep ascent, but non–technical, although sometimes requires the use of walking crampons. You can download our information pack by filling in the form at the end of this page.

Accessibility

The village of Imlil, easily accessible from Marrakesh, is the starting point for most treks and climbs to Mount Toubkal.

Tourist Culture

Women in Western-style attire are welcomed in Marrakesh; they are not required to cover their heads. Restaurants and bars serve alcohol, and the local attitude to travellers is very hospitable.

Scenic Beauty

The trek to Mount Toubkal offers stunning views of the Atlas Mountains, valleys, and traditional Berber villages. The landscape varies from lush green valleys to rocky, snow-covered slopes near the summit.

Fitness

The trek to the summit of Mount Toubkal requires a reasonable level of fitness and acclimatisation to the high altitude.

Itinerary

27th March:

Day 1

Arrival: You will be welcomed at the airport of Marrakesh and transferred to your Riad (a typical Moroccan house with an interior garden or courtyard) inside the Medina of Marrakesh. 3-star, 2-person sharing.

Accommodation: Riad Bayti Marrakech or similar.

*Single supplement available for off-mountain accommodation for an additional USD 200 (Riad accommodation only).

28th March:

Day 2

Drive from Marrakesh to Hauuz Plain and on to the town of Imlil (1,740 m), situated in the agricultural Mizane valley. Acclimatisation walk to 2,500 m—4 hours—sleep in basic lodge.

Accommodation: (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) – 1-star accommodation.

29th mARCH:

Day 3

From Imlil, we begin our trek with a pleasant walk (6 hours) through groves of walnut trees to the Berber village of Aremd (1,950 m). From here, we head up to Sidi Chamharouch, an Islamic shrine, and then on to the recently extended and comfortable Refuge Toubkal hut at a height of 3,207 m.

Accommodation: Night in bunks at the Refuge Toubkal hut (or the French Alpine Club Refuge). 3,300 m – (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

30TH March:

Day 4

Summit day climb:  This takes approximately 5 to 6 hours for the average fit person. We start in the dark (time to be confirmed on the day) and reach the Tizi ‘n Toubkal saddle – 3,941 m at sunrise. We climb a ridge from the saddle to the summit (4,167 m). From the summit, we descend back to the Refuge and have a light breakfast. We pack up and descend all the way to the nearest village in Aremd. Drive back to Marrakesh for a late arrival and check-in. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

31st March: Day 5

Excursion to Essaouira – Today, we take the road west to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Our destination is the historic port of Essaouira, the modern name of the historic city of Mogador. This colourful coastal fishing town offers an ocean climate, a beautiful beach, a fishing port, impressive fortifications, and Medina. Visit the fortifications and the excellent factories that sell locally carved and polished thuya wood products. Visit the Skala, the port, the Jewish quarter, and the government craft centre for silver. Lunch is in a family guest house. After enjoying time at the beach and in the souks, we return to Marrakesh in the afternoon. (Breakfast only. Lunch is for your own account.)

1st April:

Day 6

Marrakesh: (Option A) We will discover the marvels of Marrakesh, and you will be guided to the sites of Bahia Palace, Saadien Tombs and Kotoubia mosque. (Option B) Morrocan Cooking class can be arranged at no additional cost.

2nd April:

Day 7

Transfer to the airport. Departure from Marrakesh.
