Trail Highlights:
The Dokolewa Pools themselves are certainly a highlight of the hike. These pristine, natural rock pools are fed by mountain streams, creating crystal-clear waters that are ideal for swimming. Surrounded by towering trees and thick undergrowth, the pools offer a peaceful setting for hikers to rest, swim, and take in the stunning surroundings.
The pools are a great spot to relax after the hike, offering an ideal place to cool off or simply enjoy the serenity of nature. The gentle sound of flowing water and the refreshing mountain air make this a perfect destination for a picnic or a quiet moment of reflection.
Another standout feature of the Dokolewa Pools hike is the journey itself. The trail winds through Magoebaskloof’s renowned Afromontane forests, known for their towering indigenous trees, lush vegetation, and rich biodiversity. As you make your way to the pools, you’ll pass by towering yellowwoods, wild fig trees, and a variety of ferns and mosses that thrive in the cool, misty environment.
The forest is also home to an array of wildlife, including bird species like the Knysna turaco, black-headed oriole, and the rare Cape parrot. The occasional sighting of samango monkeys adds a playful element to the hike, and if you’re lucky, you might spot bushbuck or other small mammals.
Packing List
A multi-day hike through Magoebaskloof requires some preparation to ensure you have an enjoyable experience. Here are some essential tips:
- Prepare for All Weather: Magoebaskloof’s weather can be unpredictable, especially in the mountains. It’s important to dress in layers and carry a waterproof jacket even if the day starts sunny. The area’s frequent mist can also make the trails slippery, so proper hiking boots with good grip are essential.
- Pack Light but Smart: For multi-day hikes, it’s crucial to pack light but ensure you have all the essentials, including enough food, water, and a first aid kit. If you’re doing the Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail, the overnight huts have basic facilities, but it’s always good to have some extra comforts like a warm sleeping bag and cooking supplies.
- Footwear: The terrain can be uneven and rocky so good-quality hiking boots with ankle support are a must.
- Fitness: While the hike isn’t overly strenuous, it does require a reasonable level of fitness due to the distances and varying terrain.
- Respect Nature: The trails in Magoebaskloof pass through protected areas, so it’s vital to respect the environment. Stick to the marked trails, carry out all your litter, and avoid disturbing wildlife.
Our package includes porters who will transport our food, cooler boxes, sleeping gear and any other personal items that you will not need for the day hikes.
For your day packs these are a few items to ensure you have an enjoyable experience:
- Water: Carry enough water for the entire hike, as the pools, while tempting, may not provide potable water.
- Snacks or a Picnic: A packed lunch or light snacks are ideal for enjoying once you reach the pools.
- Swimsuit and Towel: The pools are perfect for swimming so bring a swimsuit if you plan to take a dip.
- Sunscreen and Hat: Even though the trail offers a lot of shade, the sun can be intense, especially in the warmer months.
- Camera or Binoculars: The forest and pools offer many opportunities for photography and birdwatching.
